Golf & Life Skills Programming
In following the rapidly changing landscape of the Coronavirus outbreak, we at The First Tee of Northwest Florida–where safety always comes first—have worked diligently to create a plan for our Spring 2020 Golf and Life Skills Classes. This plan has been developed in consultation with the warnings and protocols of our area School Districts, governmental bodies, golf course operators and in discussion with our Board, Staff, Parents and especially our front-line heroes—our First Tee Coaches.
Golf & Life Skills Programming: In Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa Counties: All Spring 2020 Golf and Life Skills Classes are postponed moving forward from now through Wednesday, April 15. We will send updates to all interested parties towards the end of this period regarding the resumption or further cancellation of classes. As a general rule, our policies will mirror school district policies by the State of Florida (or county-to-county if a variance develops).
In Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa Counties: All classes are postponed moving forward from now until after March 30. We will send updates to all interested parties towards the end of the month regarding the resumption or further cancellation of classes.
GPJGA Upcoming Tournaments & Events
Our Chapter will plan to update our Parents and Participants as frequently as possible and if/when we see definitive information that clarifies the path forward. In the interim we recommend Participants continue to study and complete their Yardage Books and practice their golf skills as time allows.
Regarding our scheduled Spring and Summer Tournaments and related programs of the Greater Pensacola Junior Golf Association and in relation to the Coronavirus outbreak:
—The local Optimist Junior Qualifier (Saturday March 21, Cypress Lakes) has been CANCELLED.
—The Fun in the Sun Adult/Junior (Sunday March 29, Emerald Bay) has been CANCELLED.
—The Joe Durant Adult/Junior (Saturday May 16, Tiger Point) is (for now) on as scheduled.
—Additionally, we will soon be announcing the dates for our three interactive on-course Players Rules Clinics, which will be held in May with USGA Senior Certified Rules Official Tony Capano at three local-area golf courses. Play in the 31st Annual GPJGA Summer Tour will begin in early June with a celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the GPJGA’s founding at Stonebrook with the full five-week schedule to be announced shortly now available on our website https://www.thefirstteenwflorida.org/calendar/. The 63rd annual Divot Derby is scheduled for July 19-23 and The 11th Annual A. Downing Gray Cup at Pensacola Country Club for August 3-4. Barring unforeseen circumstances, all will continue as planned. That said, we will encourage some aspects of “Social Distancing” as necessary (while maintaining a focus on courtesy and sportsmanship) and be cognizant of health risks as the dynamic of this outbreak evolves and changes. The health and safety of our Participants, Parents, Staff and others remains paramount for our Organization.
Goofy Golf of Pensacola Facility
At The First Tee of Northwest Florida, safety of our participants is always of primary concern. In regards to the operations of our Goofy Golf Facility in Warrington during the current Coronavirus outbreak, we have implemented additional protocol to heighten our focus on the safety of our guests, and (as of today) we are not announcing any changes in our schedule–and plan to be open daily during the upcoming Escambia/Santa Rosa Spring Break. In addition to the antibacterial hand soap and hand sanitizer stations already in place around the facility, our staff will be additionally sanitizing all putters when they come in from use; all golf balls will be sanitized each evening, and our tee mats and cups will be sanitized a minimum of once per day and generally more often based on facility utilization and scheduled events. We ask all guests to follow recommended precautions for their own personal safety and look forward to seeing you in the near future.
The Golf Ball Gala
Regarding the Third Annual Golf Ball Gala, scheduled for the evening of Friday, April 10, we have made the decision to postpone the Gala at this time in the interest of the health and safety of our patrons and in conjunction with the Masters announcement of the postponing of their Annual Tournament. As we do not yet know the date of the rescheduled Masters, we have tentatively booked the date of Friday, September 25 at Skopelos at New World Landing for our Gala, which would coincide with day one of the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits. We will keep all interested parties updated regarding the makeup date, and appreciate your patience and understanding.
The Helicopter Golf Ball Drop
The Helicopter Ball Drop, originally scheduled for April 12th at the conclusion of the Blue Wahoo’s Game has been postponed pending delay of Minor League Baseball schedule.
